At the Mobile World Congress today Adobe is to demonstrate AIR running on the Motorola Droid. This is pretty significant news as it's based on Flash 10.1, and thousands of apps (think BBC iPlayer etc) have been waiting for just this. AIR is far more than flash, however. As a complete runtime environment it allows apps outside the browser with their own SQL database, UI and hardware support such as multi-touch, acellerometer sensors and GPS. Developer support is promised too, with SDK's from both handset ODM's and carriers expected. Web apps outside the browser promise to further strengthen the Android corporate penetration, as the environment can be controlled to a much higher degree than regular apps.

Well ahead of even its first official Android handset launch, Motorola posted Q3 sales of $5.5 billion which at last put the beleaguered handset manufacturer in profit. The results place it in a strong position to capitalise and develop on its Android-only smartphone strategy, with at least 3 models expected before the holiday season and its well publicised Verizon partnership expected to go formal with the Droid and Eris handset launches next week. We reported several times before Motorola has appeared to turn the corner after its deep job losses of a couple of years ago and its deep restructuring.

Exactly a year ago today Google open sourced the Android codebase, so let's raise a glass to our little green buddy who's name, by the way, is rumoured around the Googleplex to be Mickey ;-) We've kept a close eye on developments during this period on the timeline, from his first baby steps, through all his tasty dessert incarnations right up to his huge buddies coming out party. Now it looks like the long-awaited Android Army is finally here, as was promised all along, so it's time to let our antennas down and party a little!

3's first Android handset is the award-winning HTC Hero which for extra sparkle comes with music in the form of Spotify. This is a great way to differentiate their offering and is sure to be a hit with its pop pickin' audience. In fact 3 invested heavily in Spotify back in August via its owner, Hutchison Whampoa, and the package is expected to launch at $161 with a monthly fee of $57.
