Archos is to join the Android party with the launch of a full-on mulitmedia tablet in the third quarter of 2009. Well-known for its line of portable multimedia players, Archos plans to use the Android telephony stack to provide the rich online experience users are demanding today. There will be a high-resolution 5-inch touch screen that will have full-width page viewing and high-definition playback. The device will probably have a similar design to its current line of Internet media tablets, but the Android-powered version will only be 0.39 inches thick.
"Support for an Android-based device represents a historical opportunity for Archos to combine all the best of our Internet media tablets with a phone in a single device delivering high-quality video and a full Web experience in true mobility," said Henri Crohas, CEO of Archos, in a statement.
Archos calls its new platform the Internet Media Tablet (IMT) and is set to show prototypes at MWC 09 in Barcelona. The specification is an impressive 500G hard drive, 5 inch screen, 7 hour battery and it they are even hinting at full HD video playback.
