ASUS logoSamson Hu, the ASUS exec in charge of the companies Eee line, has confirmed they have a dedicated team working on porting Android to their netbook line. He did make clear they handn't decided if this will make it into an actual launched product, but this news is enough to cause as many sleepless nights in Seattle as it is partying in Mountain View. Netbooks are the fastest growing segment of the PC industry right now, and ASUS is flush with the runaway sucess of its Eee brand, which caught them and the industry by suprise. The fact this is possible isn't in doubt so the exercise remains one largely of sales and marketing., and no doubt a little deal-making with a certain well-known internet search engine company ;-)

Microsofts CEO Steve Ballmer has aired his concerns over the growing trend towards linux based OS's on netbooks. Speaking to Wall St analysts recently he admitted seeing Android running on hardware beyond mobile phones as inevitable, and sees it along with Mac OS X as their key rivals.
Asus isn't the first player to announce its plans to move Android beyond the handset, but having similar products already in the market based on Linux makes it the most serious.
