Motorola MilestoneThere are some smart cookies at Motorola. The Droid handset which Verizon is pumping hard across the US is to be called the "Milestone" when it launches in Europe - presumably so we can all look back at the first of their Android lineups as the turning point in the companies fortunes. However, it's not just the names that differ. According to their own websites, the Europeans get multitouch. This simply cannot be down to technical reasons, so it's left to the imagination what kind of legal wranglings are going on behind the scenes.

Milestone also gets HSDPA, but thats presumably because the Droid uses Verizons CDMA which isn't used in Europe.

The first country to get the Milestone is Germany, where it goes on sale from November 9th, to be carried by O2 and Vodafone. When it comes to GPS navigation, the Motorola Milestone will offer MOTONAV turn-by-turn navigation, Google Maps and E-Compass Latitude. Courtesy of Android 2.0, there's also an improved Android mobile browser with HTML5 support in the Motorola Milestone. An 8GB microSD memory card will be bundled in the package, while the incorporated memory slot supports up to 32GB memory cards.

Motorola also emphasizes the fact that the Motorola Milestone is powered by a fast OMAP3430 chipset boasting a 600 MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor like the iPhone 3GS and Nokia N900. Firmware upgrades will be provided over-the-air via either the Motorola Milestone's Wi-Fi or 3G connection.

The US version, the Droid, goes on sale on  November 6th.
