Hello - I am trying to make a video of my app running in the emulator. I know how to get single screendumps, what I want is an avi movie of my session. Anyone done this before please?

In case anyone comes across this in the future Camstudio http://camstudio.org/ is all you need: its free, and produces excellent avis of your Android emulator sessions.

VMWare users can record as avis any session from a virtual machine.
