Seems odd that the content observer included with Android does not make an attempt to inform the observer of the nature of the change, but that is the case, this puts the onus on the observer to work out what to do with the change.

It may be worth developing an extension to this in the future, but for now the answer seems to be remember the state and preform a re-query, the re instate the state, not efficient but safe.
