The first Nexus One update will start rolling out any time soon. This contains various fixes and enhancements including:

  • 3G stability improvements
  • Multitouch
  • Google Maps V 3.4
  • Google Goggles

There have been various glitches reported with the Nexus One since its launch - some of which are not mentioned in this update, such as the screen losing its touch and car bluetooth problems, but perhaps the worst was 3G being described as "spotty". This was noticeable where the signal strength fluctuated wildly - even when in a desk next to a G1 which held a rock steady 3 bars, for example.

Google goggles will be installed by default now - this is the app which lets you take a picture, send it to goggles and with a dash of luck a description of where the location is will be returned.

In particular, the new multitouch functionality is raising quite a few eyebrows. This was the traditional stick iPhone fanbois used to beat up Android users - usually countered by the iPhones lack of multitasking. Not any more. Long suspected to be an agreement the two software giants had when Eric Schmidt sat on both companies boards, it appears now the gloves are off. This is especially interesting after Steve Jobs publicly ridiculed Googles "do no evil" mantra after the recent iPod launch.
